Training Strategy

Each company and individual undertaking a course has skills levels, attitudes and desired outcomes which are unique to themselves. Working in partnership with an organisation, ATC adopts a personalised approach which takes into account these differences and achieves the right results for the client.

ATC has provided Proactive Driver Training for organisations across all types of industries and services, e.g. pharmaceutical companies, financial services institutions, emergency services, government departments, car manufacturers, hospitals, service industries and rail companies.

This experience has given ATC an understanding of the driver training needs of each of these market areas. We get to know these organisations in the most valuable way possible - first-hand from people in the front line. With this knowledge we are able to work with our clients in delivering the most appropriate training programmes to meet their objectives and financial resources.

Our training has a three-point strategy: the Driver, the Car and the Road

The Driver
The internal and external pressures and stresses on an individual will affect their performance of whatever task they have in hand, and can either enhance or detract from the result.

Personal pressures, at home and work, time pressures, external distractions and mobile/car phone use can impact considerably on driving performance and, therefore, people need to be shown how to minimise risk and maximise safety.

We will achieve this through the development and understanding of the three main mental skills in driving, namely, concentration, observation and anticipation, and how these influence our reaction to hazards.

The Vehicle
Our experience has shown a marked difference in attitude towards vehicle maintenance between own car drivers and company/pool car drivers. Owner-drivers generally take responsibility for their vehicles as they have a vested interest in its value. Company/pool car drivers, however, do not often have the attitude of duty of care because they feel they are not ultimately responsible for the vehicle.

Our training addresses this issue on four fronts:

  1. Legislation - We inform delegates of their legal responsibilities, as many people do not realise that when they drive a vehicle they are responsible for its roadworthiness.
  2. Personal safety - We emphasise and demonstrate how failure to carry out the ‘driver's duties' can have serious consequences for them, their colleagues, and the public.
  3. Protecting client's assets and public image - we highlight the implications that failing to maintain vehicles will have on the financial effectiveness of the organisation, and how taking a little care and time will in the long-term make economical sense.
  4. Protecting the environment - we make delegates aware how they can reduce the effect of pollution from vehicles on the environment with better fuel efficient driving, and how better use of the vehicle will reduce wear and tear, the demand on natural resources and the production of waste.
All our courses include practical guidance on how to carry out road-worthiness checks in an easy to follow manner, and no practical driving occurs until this has occurred.

The Road
ATC's Proactive Driver Training is an approach towards driving which enables a driver to find themselves travelling at the right speed, in the right gear and at the right time for the circumstances they are experiencing.

Our training, whether practical or theory based, aims to achieve this through development of heightened driver awareness of risk. We do this by concentrating on the three most common risk areas, where the greatest threat to driver and vehicle safety lies:

  • Where we cross, meet and emerge
  • Stationary vehicles
  • Rear-end collisions
This is achieved by addressing these areas in the main environments the delegates are familiar with i.e. urban, rural areas and on multi-lane roads.

These are fundamental areas which are addressed in all training courses and which will give delegates the understanding to become safer and more conscientious drivers.
